Growing coffee beans in the shade basically saves an entire ecosystem including plant life, trees, birds, insects and mammals. As they replant year after year, the land becomes spent, and they are no longer able to grow coffee beans in the same location, so farmers clear-cut more rain forest -a vicious cycle is born.
In order to increase their yield, many farmers clear-cut areas of rain forests to make way for more fields for more coffee. Farmers who grow these beans are paid on a per-pound basis. As our coffee culture has exploded, so has the demand for beans.

Doing the right thing was easier with the help of the Arbor Day Foundation. Founded in 1972, the Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit conservation and education organization. The Arbor Day Foundation mission is to “inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees.” The organization’s goal is not only to plant trees, but also to preserve existing forests. Switching to shade-grown coffee was no small task, but it was worth it.
